New Kit

Cambridge United have a new kit which I may actually buy seeing as how good it is. I aired this opinion on the club message board and was quoted on the main site. I’m the 11th comment down on the linked-to article. If you’re desperately short of anything meaningful to do with your time…

Smells

On the rare occasion that I’m asked for a favourite smell I can never think about anything other than things like bread, baked potatoes, coffee etc. All very dull.

But I must remember, fresher and sweeter than them all…

Tomato leaves.

History

Even though I’m a cynical soul, I do love days like today. It’s witnessing history which, even when it’s seen through TV, the internet and radio, is so exciting. We have a new Prime Minister, and I am alive to see it as people were alive to see Pitt, Disraeli, Gladstone, Churchill & co. take office. People will be reading about today in history books one day, and I am here right now. I like that…

All Change…

Ten years ago we were all sick of the Conservatives and desperately wanted change. So many people voted Labour, and in particular for Tony Blair. He promised so much change, and yet during his time in office he introduced policies that in opposition he had fought against. We didn’t get Labour, we got the Conservatives for another ten years. I’m glad I wasn’t one of the many people who voted for him or I’d feel even more disillusioned. I’ll remember him for directing a fortune towards bureaucracy whilst claiming it was doing good in the real world. And of course Iraq, where we made sure another country didn’t attack us first by attacking them first. So much for setting a good example. He’s off to be a Middle East peace envoy now, and who doesn’t wish him all the best? I’d wish anyone the best of luck in that job because it would be fantastic if the killing would stop, but I’m not sure a man who is so much in George W. Bush’s pocket is going to be as effective as is being hoped. We’ll see.

We’ll also see about the new Prime Minister. He’s my sixth Prime Minister, although I can only remember Thatcher, Major and Blair. Despite myself I’m going to take him at face value and hope he does a good job. Whatever, I suspect there’s going to be a little less spin. So I welcome you enthusiastically Mr. Brown, but please don’t let us down like Mr. Blair did…

Fantastic Place

It should have been 51 because I’m not sure how I managed to miss this one off. It’s one of my favourites…

Tony Blair

An American puppet who rushed into war in the Middle East acting as chief Middle East peace-maker?

The world has truly gone mad…

Henry vs Bent & Football on TV

Not long after posting about the similar prices of Thierry Henry and Darren Bent, Murph asked me if I was joking. He couldn’t believe that Henry was going so cheaply and, more astonishingly, that Bent had a £17m price tag on his head. Can anyone? I think Arsenal are in a spot of bother because I felt that for next season they needed a quality striker to play alongside Henry. Now they’ve lost him too I’m not sure where the goals are going to be coming from.

It would seem that finally I can have the TV package I always wanted. When the Sky monopoly was broken and Setanta won rights to various matches I was dubious as to how that was going to benefit viewers. I wanted to be able to buy the Sky Sports package for £15ish without having to also buy loads of other ‘entertainment’ channels I’d never watch for another £20 on top of that. I even wrote to Sky about it but they have no plans to change their pricing structure. Maybe they will now… It would seem that for £15 a month you can subscribe to the Setanta Sports Pack and for that you get nine sports channels and for that you get a golf channel, a couple of horse racing channels and an American sport channel. More importantly you also get :

46 Live Premiership Games (Sky’s rejects but still…)
60 Live Scottish Premiership Games (Of interest…
Top European Football Live (No more Radio FiveLive, as good as it is, for big games)
and most excitingly of all…
79 Live Blue Square Conference Games - meaning Cambridge United live on TV!!!

When we’ve moved, I may treat myself. Oh yes…

Barcelona Beware!

Before you confirm the signing of Thierry Henry for £16m remember…

You could get excellent striker Darren Bent for about the same money.

Think carefully…

Abbots Bromley Horn Dance

I’ll also stop with the video posting soon. Really. But for now I’ll put up this… It’s a video of the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance as performed by Thaxted Morris Men. This is them in 2006, but we saw them on Saturday night. More will be posted later…

I’ll stop going on about Marillion soon (maybe)

Whilst browsing YouTube (which I am loving more and more) I came across this footage from Marillion’s concert at The Junction which I was at. It’s been taken by a member of the audience (who obviously lists guitarist Steve Rothery as his favourite band member) and so the editing and sound aren’t great but it’s a good montage of the concert. Enjoy if you can…

Four Idiots

Because I can’t have the MacWorld video being the only clip on the site…

Received this today and I think it’s rather funny.

Snap Shots

I’ve added Snap Shots, which means that from now on if you hover over an external link you’ll get a preview of the linked-to page. It’s a standard feature of Wordpress.com but an option for Wordpress.org that you need to install yourself.

These things I can do…

Upgrading Memory

A fortnight after quadrupling the memory to 2GB in my PC so that Vista worked properly I’ve doubled the memory in my Mac to 2GB so that OSX and XP will work together properly when running Parallels. Both were painless operations but whereas I’ve changed the memory in PCs many times I was relieved when it came to my Mac to find the following video* by which showed me how to do it, and this blog post which reassured me that you really do need to use that much pressure to get them home.

How did people know how to do things before the internet?

*It’s not a fascinating video by any means and there’ll be no Oscars won for voice talents, but it was very useful and so I post it here for all who might need to see it. Oddly, whilst doing this myself I reached for the first coin I found in my odds and ends drawer to use to unlock the casing. It was a quarter. I have no idea how I’ve come to have this so easily to hand when it’s nearly four years since I was in the US…

Google Sketchup

Google is, overall, wonderful.

I discovered this last week, which may or may not have been around for ages but is anyway new to me. It’s called Google Sketchup and it allows you to create little 3D models of buildings or…anything really. I think it was originally created to allow people to generate 3D buildings for Google Earth but it’s also great fun to play with, if a little bit pointless if you don’tactually need a 3D rendition.

Still, a pokey bit of software and once again free. Oh Google…

Permalinks

I’ve just spent 30 minutes or so trying to get my head around permalinks. I get them. Just.  But it would seem that as my websites are all hosted on Windows servers (I currently need Front Page extensions for www.madison-house.co.uk, but I’m working on alternatives) I can’t change the permissions for the .htaccess file. If I can’t do that, it’ll just have to wait. Which is a shame. That may be an incorrect assumption of course, but it staggers me that it’s an incorrect assumption that I think I understand.

What it means in real terms is that the URL for the Support page of this site (for example) is http://www.foolhandy.com/?page_id=5 when it would obviously be much nicer if it were http://www.foolhandy.com/support.

I don’t feel at all out of my depth…

Punctuation

We should be careful. People shouldn’t get into the habit of throwing stones if they may later walk into a glass house.

However.

This blog post, again from tender[hooligan], had me on the look out…

I’m fairly certain that this Topps Tiles lorry is missing something, but am willing to be corrected…

[Edit : Of course, unless there's a word "No1" it's missing something else too...]

Marillion. Again.

After reading this post from tender [hooligan] on, amongst other things, long guitar solos I found myself trying to sell Marillion. Again. I’ve never succeeded before and I doubt very much I shall now but you can but try.

So a 50 track MP3 CD will soon be on its way to Oxford.

They may be repetitive, but at least these posts are positive…

Adverts

Following the lead from Murph I’ve added Adsense to this site. You should see some text ads down to the right which are supposed to relate to the text here, hence the many references to ‘Handy’ items.

I did toy with picture ads but this was the first one to come up :

I’m sure it’s a very honourable institution, but I’m not sure how Google came to think it tied in with anything here…

Thankyou Whoever You Are

Number 15. Not bad for Marillion eh? Third Top 20 single in three years.

And I’m listening to it on Radio 1 as I type!

Britain’s Got Talent

I’ve been on/off watching Britain’s Got Talent on ITV. It’s a Simon Cowell show and I think he’s great so evn though it’s also got Piers Morgan (PLEASE someone mention the photos!) I do enjoy it.

However, if Bessie Curzons wins I shall be sorely tempted to take measures to disassociate myself with the British public. She can’t sing, she can’t do anything remotely natural, she acts and looks like one of the dreadful beauty pageant girls in the US. Compare her to Connie Talbot who oozes charm and seems to be loving every minute of it for real, rather than putting on a plastic act of someone who is supposed to be enjoying it. And she can actually sing. I know it’s naff to want a six-year old to win but she’s not your usual appallingly precocious protege. She just seems normal, even if she’s not. So for me it’s her or the other singer Paul Potts. Both of them are a class apart from the rest.

Marillion. Britain’s Got Talent. Renault Lagunas. I’m so hip it makes me ache…
