PC World Acer Computer & Maxtor External Hard Drive Advert

I’ve been waiting for this to appear on YouTube since it came out. The “…and you could do with an external hard drive!” refrain at around 14 seconds is genius in its Carry On-esque non-entendre. And then there’s the dad’s face at the end…

Although no fan of PC World or (usually) its ads - this is fighting the Gorilla for ad of the year!

I may well have her as my ringtone…

  1. I don’t get it! Why is it so funny?

  2. Helen doesn’t understand to the extent that I do either…

I think it’s the way it’s edited. They have to cram lots into a small space and so the girl doesn’t breath between “college room…” and “…and you could” so although it’s supposed to be a real snapshot of the kind of conversation that might happen in PC World it’s actually wonderfully false.

Then there’s the way she says it. I half expect her to be winking to the camera and nudging the sales assistant with her elbow as she whisks her Dad away. Of course, “…and you could do with an external hard drive!” isn’t at all rude or suggestive (although maybe the word ‘hard’ helps?) and it’s because it’s so non-suggestive I find the way she says it funny.

And her Dad’s face at the end… Well how can someone supposed to be acting but actually looking like he’s having his brain drained from a tap in the back of his neck not be funny?

You’ve made me intellectualise it now but really, like my recent insult on petticoats, it makes me giggly for reasons I don’t really understand! :)

  3. hahahhaha! OK! I didn’t get any of that, but I’m glad that you did! ;)

  4. There is of course the additional question of whether the Dad is in any need whatsoever of a place to store 125000 music tracks…

    It’s genius I tell you!

  5. Yes, if you say so! ;)
