Thanks to everyone who entered, please let me know if you’d like to do it again next year, and if so if you’d like any changes made.

Oh, and please keep your fingers crossed for Cambridge on Sunday as they endeavor to go up with Jimmy & Willy.

Premiership Position Predictor - Late March

Very much later than it should have been, here is the Late March update to the Premiership Position Predictor!

The scores below include the swaps made by several players and are current as of just after Man U’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa this evening. Scores are out of 1000.

1. Karl - 895pts
2. Murph - 883pts
3. Steve - 866pts
=4. Helen - 856pts
=4. Alex - 856pts
6. Kymee - 789pts
7. Colin - 771pts
8. Rob - 770pts
9. Gay - 758pts
10. Kyle - 749pts
11. Alfie - 459pts

So with six games to go I move into a slight lead, but it must be remembered that as it’s all down to position correlations scores can go up as well as down…

Premiership Position Predictor - January

I didn’t get around to posting anything in November and December - sorry…

Here though is the beautifully colourful chart for January (click on it to see it full size) :

jan08.jpg

From it you can see that I’m very narrowly in the lead, followed by Murph and then a tie between Gay & Alex for third. It’s all worked out as a correlation so the nearer to 1 you are the better.

There’s still a long way to go, and remember that we have now entered the January Swap Window…

Between now and January 30th you can reply to this post, or e-mail me, stating the two teams you would like like to swap positions in your predictions. For example, if you are now regretting placing Tottenham so well you could swap them with high flying Aston Villa. Or you may be supremely confident and want to keep your predictions as they are - which is also fine. Only two teams can be swapped though, and the other eighteen teams will all stay in the same places, so choose carefully…

A reminder as we enter the new year that the prize this year is £10 to spend in the Cambridge United Club Shop, which can be visited (to imagine what you’ll spend your prize money on) by clicking here.

Good luck, and remember to let me know any swaps by the end of January.

Premiership Position Predictor - October

Third of the month again and all our scores have gone down… I may have to create some kind of graph at the end of the season to see the ups and downs of it all. What I do know is that as I typed in the positions of Chelsea & Tottenham everyone’s scores plummeted…

Here are the scores on the doors, with last month’s positions in brackets :

(1) 1. Murph 749
(7) 2. Rob 701
(2) 3. Gay 695
(3=) 4. Alex 683
(5) 5. Karl 662
(6) 6. Steve 645
(3=) 7. Helen 641
(8) 8. Kimberley 562
(9) 9. Kyle 486
(10) 10. Alfie 460
(11) 11. Colin 400

Well done again to Murph, with Rob & Helen fast becoming our resident yo-yos…

Remember that you can swap two teams at any point during January if you think that might help you. Comment has been made that the limited swapping options aren’t ideal, and I’m not inclined to disagree. I wanted to keep it simple for me and yourselves, but I’ll be asking for feedback at the end of the season.

Until the 3rd of November then…

Premier Position Predictor - September

It’s the third of the month, and due to the wonders of Excel equations I’ve updated the scores on time!

Here they are, with August’s positions in brackets at the beginning and August’s scores in brackets afterwards - we’re all doing much better (to one degree or another) now the season in moving on and the table is looking more sensible.

(3) 1. Murph 827 (414)
(4) 2. Gay 731 (403)
(2) 3= Alex 713 (454)
(5) 3= Helen 713 (397)
(7) 5. Karl 708 (313)
(10) 6. Steve 690 (244)
(1) 7. Rob 681 (469)
(6) 8. Kimberley 675 (359)
(9) 9. Kyle 609 (293)
(8) 10. Alfie 552 (304)
(11) 11. Colin 429 (-47)

So there we are. Well done Murph  for rising to the top but remember that the scores aren’t accumulative so within reason it’s possible, especially at this early part of the season, for positions to change considerably month-by-month.

The next update will appear here on the 3rd October…

Premiership Position Predictor - August

The entries (eleven of them) are in, and although I’ll post the ongoing results on the 3rd of each month I thought I’d post the current leaders after just 2/3 games and silly things (like Man City topping the table) are happening.

I’ve altered the scoring system slightly in that now I’m using a simple correlation equation in Excel rather than doing it all manually - that way I’m more likely to get the results out when I say I will. It won’t effect the winner, just my ability to get the scores out on time.

As it’s a correlation 1 is the perfect score and -1 is the worst. To make it less ungainly I’m then multiplying each score by 1000 so if you predict the table 100% correctly your score will be 1000, and the further from perfect you are the nearer to -1000 (the lowest possible) your score will be.

So, here we go…

1. Rob 469
2. Alex 454
3. Murph 414
4. Gay 403
5. Helen 397
6. Kymee 359
7. Karl 313
8. Alfie 304
9. Kyle 293
10. Steve 244
11. Colin -47

Early days yet of course, and so still much to play for.

On the request of Rob (who might change his mind looking at his current position) I have created a January Transfer Window rule. As follows : Players can swap the positions of two teams once during the month of January. The swap can take place on any day in January but once made can not be undone or added to.

And that’s it until the evening of the 3rd September when I’ll update the scores/positions.

** Cambridge United are top of the Blue Square Premier. Irrelevant to this post, but I had to mention it!

(Apologies if this looks a bit rough - it’s been typed up in Word and copy/pasted here when internet connections allow.)

Premiership Position Predictor

For the 2007/8 Premiership season I shall be running the position predictor again.

All you have to do is predict the positions the 20 Premiership teams will finish in on the last day of the season in May 2008. The person closest will win some Cambridge United merchandising up to the value of £10, which you don’t have to have if you don’t want. I will understand… It goes without saying that this competition is free!

Scoring is as follows : 0 points for the exact position, 1 point for 1 place away, 2 points for 2 places away and so on… The nearer to zero you are the better you’re doing.

Scores will be updated on the first of each month and posted here in the blog under a Premiership Position Predictor tag by the end of the third day of each month.

To enter, simply place the 20 Premiership teams below in the order you think they’ll finish next May and post them in the comments on the Premiership Position Predictor page WITH YOUR NAME. And that’s it for the season - easier than Fantasy Football eh?

Closing date is midnight on Sunday 12th August 2007, which allows you to see each team play once, should you wish to, before entering.

I’ll put my prediction in over the next couple of days to start the ball rolling - please don’t leave me playing with myself…

Karl

The teams… Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham, Blackburn, Bolton, Chelsea, Derby, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Reading, Sunderland, Tottenham, West Ham & Wigan.
